LYMPHATIC TONIC - Cleavers is essentially a lymphatic alterative with useful diuretic and skin healing effects. Cleavers is a very valuable plant, being perhaps the best tonic to the lymphatic system available. As a lymphatic tonic with alterative and diuretic actions it may be used safely in a wide range of problems where the lymphatic system is involved. These include swollen glands (lymphadenitis) anywhere in the body, especially in tonsillitis and adenoid trouble.
DIURETIC - Cleavers is helpful in the treatment of cystitis and other urinary conditions. As a soothing relaxant and diuretic, Cleavers is indicated by the German Commission E for treating kidney and gall bladder gravel and urinary tract infection accompanied by fever, water retention and burning or painful urination.
SKIN TONIC - improvements in lymphatic function have been shown to improve general detoxification and can help resolve skin disorders such as psoriasis. Cleavers is an alterative herb which indicates that it has a blood cleansing effect. Within Welsh herbal tradition The Book of Howel the Physician makes a clear distinction, so far as Cleavers is concerned, between the fresh juice and the dried herb. It would appear that the benefits associated with Cleavers regarding psoriasis are far more potent when using the fresh herb.
ANTI-ULCER - there is a long tradition for the use of Cleavers in the treatment of external ulcers and abnormal growths, which may be the result of improved lymphatic drainage.
Potential applications - Beneficial for improving lymphatic detoxification. Use is cases of swollen lymph glands such as tonsillitis. Skin disorders due to poor lymphatic circulation – the cause of psoriasis may be partly explained by this. Kidney / bladder discomfort and general oedema (water retention). Some researchers have found that Cleavers can help aid circulation in the elderly. Externally it can be used for applying to burns or abrasions. Cleavers is slightly blood pressure lowering (hypotensive) and anti-inflammatory.
