Viridian Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a structure of mucopolysaccharide composed of hydrophilic molecules of Glucuronic acid and N-acetyl glucosamine which bind water and lubricate moveable parts of the human body, especially joints and muscles. It is so called ‘nature’s moisturiser’ for its incredible moisturising properties especially when used in skin-care products. HA also cushions nerves and ends of bones and forms a barrier against the spread of disease.
Viridian utilise a vegan form of Hyaluronic Acid produced by fermentation processes rather than an animal derived product (typically rooster combs or chicken sternum).
How does Hyaluronic Acid compare to glucosamine or chondroitin?
Glucosamine is a precursor of Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic Acid in turn is utilised for the production and synthesis of important cushioning and moisturising compounds such as synovial fluid. Glucosamine combines with a glucuronic acid molecule to make Hyaluronic Acid. Often the body is not able to join these two molecules together and the production of the much needed Hyaluronic Acid is limited. Oral supplementation of Hyaluronic Acid maximises the availability of this compound, thus enhancing the body’s regenerative potential.
- Anti-Ageing – The skin is the most important site of HA activity in our body, with approximately 50% of it is found in the skin, and contributes to proper viscosity of synovial fluid and vitreous gel of the eye Hyaluronic acid and collagen are vital to maintaining the skin’s layers and structure. It is the collagen that gives the skin its firmness but it is the HA that nourishes and hydrates the collagen. Hyaluronic Acid acts as a space-filler by binding to water and thus keeping the skin wrinkle-free.
Contributing to its amazing moisture ability, hyaluronic acid acts as a space-filler in dermal layers between skin cells and produces a long-lasting skin enhancement which makes skin soft, smooth and elastic, especially for the face and lips.In conditions of premature ageing, such as Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (progeria), there is a 17-fold increase in hyaluronic acid excretion compared to age-matched controls.
- Wound Healing - HA is a regulator of the wound healing process and provides the needed structural nutrition to form a matrix of new tissue. It is a crucial component to skin tissue reconstruction following trauma. Chondroitin sulphate has been shown to raise HA production in the body, with large doses successfully rebuilding and healing cardiac tissue.
- Anti-arthritic – HA acts as a cushion for bones. With its high lubrication and cushioning effect, it resists compression and allows the joints to bear weight and withstand tension. In the meanwhile, it carries nutrients to the cartilage and removes waste materials from the joint capsule, thus keeping our joints healthy and strong. Hyaluronic acid preparations have been shown to decrease pain and increase function in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Mechanisms of therapeutic effect include restoration of more normal synovial fluid with improved viscoelasticity, effects on cartilage biosynthesis and degradation, anti-inflammatory effects, and direct analgesic effects.
- Osteoporosis and Menopausal Health - Research has shown that oral use of HA has resulted in decreased content of pyridinoline (a marker of bone tissue loss) in urine, resulting in increased bone density. Prior to menopause, oestrogen elevates HA levels maintaining healthy hair, skin and nails. Natural approaches to hormone regulation along with supplemental HA can help optimise natural beauty when oestrogen levels begin to decline.
Viridian Hyaluronic Acid - 50mg Veg Caps
Dosage: The body makes and degrades a few thousand milligrams of HA per day. With advancing age or disease, the degradation rate is not completely made up by the rate of synthesis, resulting in what we know as the slow progressive signs of visible ageing.
50mg capsule 1-3 times daily with food as a maintenance dose.
150-300mg per day has proved to be effective in restoring joint health in osteoarthritis.
Potential applications: Anti-ageing e.g. wrinkles, wound healing, scarring, acne, post surgical tissue recovery, menopausal skin/hair health, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, fractures, connective tissue disorders, sports injuries, nerve compression and trauma, eye disorders (particularly far-sightedness), potential role in genetic disorders of premature ageing e.g. progeria.
Known contraindications: Not recommended in patients with hypertension or in cases of lymphedema due to cancer. It has been suggested that oral HA should be avoided by those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The classic symptoms of morning stiffness in a RA patient are caused by an autoimmune reaction degrading HA during sleep.
Safety: Studies have shown that Sytrinol is well tolerated, with no toxics effects following consumption of polymethoxylated flavones in amounts up to 1% of the diet — the equivalent of an 70 kg (150 lbs.) individual consuming almost 14 grams per day.
Side Effects: Regular fluid ingestion, at least 2 litres of water daily, is important for those using HA.
Interactions: Due to the hydrophilic (water attracting) nature of HA it is not recommended alongside the use of diuretic medication.

Note: Hyaluronic acid is a member of the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) family and is comprised of linear, unbranching, polyanionic disaccharide units consisting of glucuronic acid and n-acetyl-glucosamine joined alternately by beta 1,3 and beta glycosidic bonds.
Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid 50mg in a base of spirulia, bilberry and alfalfa.
