Viridian Magnesium Taurate

Viridian’s Magnesium Taurate (amino acid chelated magnesium) formula provides an advanced synergistic approach to many common ailments.

Potential applications: Cardiovascular disorders e.g. elevated cholesterol, arrhythmia, seizure disorders, ocular disorders e.g. retinal degeneration, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, hepatic disorders (shown to lower bilirubin levels in acute hepatitis), cystic fibrosis, alcoholism (alcohol withdrawal), xenobiotic (external contaminant) detoxification, infant growth and development, pre-eclampsia. In cases of cystic fibrosis 30mg/kg of taurine given over 4 months has been shown to significantly reduce fecal fatty acids, thus improved bile acid conjugation and fatty acid absorption. In cases of alcoholism, taurine has been utilised at 1g given three times daily for 7 days resulting in significantly fewer psychotic episodes.

Seventy percent of the magnesium in the body is found in the bones. The other 30 percent is found mainly in the soft tissues and blood. More magnesium than calcium is found in the muscle tissues. The brain has twice as much magnesium as any other body tissues. Individuals with osteoporosis have lower magnesium content, and other indicators of magnesium deficiency, than people without osteoporosis. In human magnesium deficiency it has been noted that there is also a corresponding decrease in levels of vitamin D. Magnesium is also necessary for the metabolism of vitamin C, phosphorus, potassium and sodium. It helps to maintain the acid/alkaline balance in the body and is part of the salty, electricity-conducting "soup" that bathes and permeates body cells.

Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid that is found in the tissues of most animal species. It is not incorporated into body proteins but is found as a free amino acid. Taurine is involved in a number of physiological processes including bile acid conjugation, osmoregulation (fluid balance), detoxification of xenobiotics, cell membrane stabilisation, modulation of cellular calcium flux, and modulation of neuronal excitability.

• BLOOD PRESSURE LOWERING – taurine lowers elevated blood pressure, retards cholesterol-induced atherogenesis, prevents arrhythmias and stabilizes platelets - effects parallel to those of magnesium. Magnesium taurate has considerable potential as a vascular-protective nutritional supplement, and might also be used as an alternative to magnesium sulfate, in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction as well as of pre-eclampsia.

• ANTI-ANXIETY – both magnesium and taurine (an inhibitory amino acid) exhibit calming effects within the central nervous system, along with protecting the cardiovascular system from the negative effects of stress.

• ENERGY ENHANCING - An underlying magnesium deficiency, even if ‘sub clinical’, can result in chronic fatigue and symptoms similar to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Many chronic fatigue syndrome patients have been shown to have low red blood cell magnesium levels.

• MIGRAINE / TENSION HEADACHES – Several researchers link low magnesium levels with both migraine and tension headaches based on their theories and clinical observations. Reduced levels of magnesium are found in the serum, saliva and red blood cells of migraine sufferers, which indicates a need for supplementation because one of magnesium’s key functions is maintenance of blood vessel tone.

• BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL - The effects of magnesium taurate in diabetes deserve particular attention, since both magnesium and taurine may improve insulin sensitivity, and also may lessen risk for the micro- and macrovascular complications of diabetes.

• DETOXIFICATION – taurine as a sulphur bearing amino acid demonstrates effectiveness in detoxifying xenobiotic substances.

• BRAIN HEALTH - taurine acts as a modulator of membrane excitability in the central nervous system by inhibiting the release of other neurotransmitters and decreasing mitochondrial release of calcium. Taurine concentrations have been found to be elevated in serum, but decreased in the brain, of some patients with epilepsy. It has been suggested that the optimal dose of taurine to treat epilepsy might be in the range of 100-500 mg/day.

Dosage range:
1-3 capsules daily for maintenance. The therapeutic range for taurine is between 500mg and 3g daily. Pediatric dosages range between 250mg and 1g daily but may depend upon the age and weight of the child.

Known contraindications:
None known.

Interactions:
Taurine has not been reported to cause any severe adverse effects. Magnesium may interact with a number of pharmaceutical drugs. Consult a physician if being administered medication.

Safety:
Studies have shown taurine administration to be safe even at higher dosages.

Pregnancy and lactation:
Data suggests that both magnesium and taurine may play a role in alleviating pre-eclampsia. It is recommended to seek a physician’s guidance regarding this issue.
