Potential Applications:
Fatigue (stress related / chronic), inflammation, detoxification (shown to detoxify dioxins), hyperacidity, gastrointestinal support (gut flora regulation), hair, skin and nail health, weight control, metabolic syndrome, glucose dysregulation, sports nutrition, nutritional support (useful for B12, iron and folic acid), immune support, hypertension, natural antioxidant protection. This formula, given its broad array of naturally occurring nutrients, can be viewed as a natural Organic multi-nutrient formula.
ORGANIC SPIRULINA (Arthrospira platensis)
Spirulina is a simple, one celled form of algae that thrives in warm, alkaline fresh-water. The name ‘Spirulina’ is derived from the latin word for ‘helix’ or ‘spiral’, denoting the physical configuration of the organism when it forms swirling, microscopic strands. Spirulina is 69 percent complete protein, with all the essential amino acids in perfect balance. In comparison beef is only 22 percent protein.
In addition, Spirulina is one of the few plant sources of vitamin B12, usually found only in animal tissues. Spirulina also provides high concentrations of many other nutrients – amino acids, chelated minerals, pigments, rhamnose sugars (complex natural plant sugars), trace elements, enzymes (SOD), and essential fatty acids (both linoleic and linolenic acid) – that are all in an easily assimilable form. Spirulina is one of the blue-green algae due to the presence of both chlorophyll (green) and phycocyanin (blue) pigments in its cellular structure. Spirulina lacks cellulose cell walls, unlike other blue/green algae; therefore it can be easily digested.
WEIGHT LOSS – Spirulina is an excellent aid to helping weight loss by helping on two fronts. Firstly, it is a rich source of protein that is quickly absorbed, and it is also low glycaemic index food. Secondly, it is a valuable source of the amino acid phenylalanine which is believed to suppress the appetite by acting on the appetite centre of the brain. Taking Spirulina between meals is a powerful tool in reducing cravings whilst providing optimum nutrition, and is high nutrient dense with a low calorie content. During exercise, spirulina has been shown to significantly increase performance, fat oxidation and glutathione (GSH) levels.
ORGANIC WHEATGRASS (Triticum aestivum) and ORGANIC BARLEYGRASS (Hordeum vulgare)
Cereal grasses are chlorophyll rich super-foods providing an abundance of nutrients. Wheat grass contains approximately 90 minerals of the 102 found in rich soil. The therapeutic properties of wheat and barley grass are virtually identical.
WEIGHT CONTROL – Cereal grasses are complete superfood rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and easily digestible carbohydrates. Cereal grasses can be used away from meals to reduce cravings and improve overall nutritional intake. The cleansing benefits of cereal grasses support healthy liver function, a central factor in weight management.
BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL – The easily assimilated amino acids and trace minerals contained in cereal grasses help maintain blood glucose levels. Reduced cravings aiding weight loss and reduced insulin requirements can be achieved through the use of green foods.
ANTIOXIDANT - Cereal grasses offer a powerful protective effect on cellular ageing and aid immune function. In addition to a wide variety of nutrients, cereal grasses offer unique digestive enzymes which help resolve indigestible and toxic substances in food. Also present is the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the special fraction P4D1. Both of these substances slow cellular deterioration and mutation and are therefore useful in the treatment of degenerative disease and in the reversal of ageing. SOD is a powerful antioxidant enzyme found in healthy cells, protecting the body against the damaging effects of free radicals. The enzyme P4D1 works by stimulating the renewal of RNA/DNA and also has powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
DETOXIFIER AND DIGESTIVE AID – Chlorophyll, the green pigment found in green foods, increases peristaltic action thus relieving constipation and normalises the secretion of digestive acids. The chlorophyll-rich alkaline effects of cereal grasses and other green foods help overcome cases of hyperacidity, control the growth of unwanted micro-organisms, detoxify the liver and deodorise the gastro-intestinal tract.
ORGANIC ALFALFA LEAF (Medicago Sativa)
Alfalfa is a valuable source of nutrients due to its deep roots, which extract nutrients from the substrate even when surface soils are depleted due to poor agricultural methods. Alfalfa is rich in vitamins (particularly vitamin K), minerals, amino acids, carotenoids, enzymes, and the green pigment, chlorophyll.
HORMONE BALANCING – alfalfa contains a group of plant compounds known as phytoestrogens. These are not true estrogens, yet they possess molecular structures similar enough to oestrogen to bind to oestradiol receptors. The three main phytoestrogens found in alfalfa are coumestrol, genistein and formonetin. These compounds have an ‘alterative’ or balancing effect on body oestrogen levels. Alfalfa also exerts thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) activity and has the additional effect of inhibiting prolactin release.
DIGESTIVE TONIC – Alfalfa is rich in enzymes and chlorophyll known to be protective and beneficial in a variety of gastric conditions. Chlorophyll is particularly beneficial as an anti-bacterial; helps reduce odours and aids with tissue healing time. A flavone compound, tricin, has been found present in alfalfa and exerts smooth muscle relaxing properties, this would appear beneficial in gastro-intestinal cramping.
CARDIO-PROTECTIVE – Alfalfa top (stem and leaves) saponins have been reported to decrease plasma cholesterol concentrations without changing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentrations, decrease intestinal absorption of cholesterol and induce the regression of atherosclerosis.
ORGANIC SEAGREENS (Wild Wrack Seaweed)
Seaweeds draw from the sea an incomparable wealth of macro-elements and trace elements. The mineral fraction of some seaweeds accounts for up to 36% of dry matter. The brown seaweeds have traditionally been used for treating thyroid goitre (hypothyroidism). Wrack (Ascophyllum) is a rich source of oceanic nutrients, many of which can be lacking in modern diets and hence cause cravings and appetite dysregulation. Through improved nutritional status and the beneficial effects of iodine rich kelp on thyroid function, healthy weight can be achieved.
DETOXIFICATION – Alginic acid, a complex polysaccharide found in Ascophyllum, passes through the body undigested, attracts and binds heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury (e.g. from amalgam fillings), and radioactive substances such as Strontium 90. Due to the alkalinity of seaweed, it can help to balance out the typically hyper-acidic Western diet.
ORGANIC CHLORELLA (broken cell wall)
Chlorella is a unicellular green algae that grows in fresh water. The principle components of Chlorella that have been shown to have certain health benefits are chlorophyll, the organism’s cell walls, beta carotene, and chlorella growth factor (CGF). Chlorella has the highest content of chlorophyll of any known plant and also contains high concentrations of many vitamins and minerals, as well as fibre, nucleic acids, amino acids, enzymes and other phytonutrients.
The synergistic effects of these components appear to exert positive effects on reducing inflammation, improving acid/alkaline balance, supporting detoxification and helping optimise nutritional status. Research from 2000 revealed that chlorella supplementation produced a significant reduction in pain experienced by fibromyalgia patients, after only 2 months of use. A number of researchers have revealed that chlorella exerts immune-stimulatory effects due to polysaccharide/protein complexes primarily composed of galactose, rhamnose and arabinose.
